What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic treatments were first developed around 1895. When receiving chiropractic care, a trained physician called a chiropractor uses their hands or specially designed tools to apply controlled pressure to alleviate pain and soreness in the body. Chiropractic treatments can be helpful for reducing any type of muscle, bone, or joint pain, aches, and strains. They are especially beneficial if you are experiencing headaches, sciatica, back pain, shoulder pain, or knee and joint pains.
Types of Chiropractic Treatments
A chiropractor may use any of the following treatments as part of your session:
Soft-tissue therapy
The body can go through a lot of wear-and-tear just by performing daily activities. Over time, this can sometimes cause injuries to the muscle, bone, and joints. When these injuries are not treated quickly, they can affect how well you move and the way your muscle functions, and eventually start to cause you pain.
In soft-tissue therapy, your chiropractor will use massage techniques or move parts of your body to release knots and break down scar tissue which improves your range of motion and helps relieve pain.
Adjustments
In an adjustment, a chiropractor will use sudden pressure to re-align joints that are out of place and help you increase your range of motion.
Joint bracing/taping
These are tapes applied to parts of your body that have been sprained to stabilize the injured muscle or joint and to support healing.
Exercises and stretches
Your chiropractor will do some exercises and stretches to restore the way the affected body parts are moving and to help them move as freely as possible.
Referrals to other medical experts
Sometimes, your chiropractor will refer you to other medical experts for anything from nutritional support to help reduce inflammation or weight loss to reduce strain on the body.
A chiropractor doesn’t look at just pain relief. They will address the root cause of your pain, while also making sure your joints are moving the way they should and that your muscles are functioning correctly.
